JiaJie (佳节)  is a real-time performance composition that uses one digital drawing tablets and Symbolic Sound’s Kyma system to shape a 8 channel sound experience. Using ‘pen’ end to control the spacial location of the sound while the ‘eraser’ end to trigger different scene.

JiaJie cited the phrase from the poem 九月九日忆山东兄弟(a poem describe the feeling of homesick during traditional festival )
“独在异乡为异客， 每逢佳节倍思亲。
遥 知兄弟登高处， 遍插茱萸少一人。”

“每逢佳节倍思亲” is the phrase that is been read in the piece. It means “My heart grows fonder of faraway loved ones on lonely festive days.”

I’ve been working on Emerging Technology Class for this quarter. Not until the first assignment, I realize that I’m so far from the “analog world”. Everything around me is so highly digitized that I’ve already forgot about asking the question: where is it come from? I’m going to build thing from the very beginning!!

In my aspect, abstract can happen in all level of cognition: we need three stages for sound to travel; two additional condition to meet for sound to exists in human being’s world ; more than 20 tissues for sound wave energy to pass on and finally across the magical transducer in our body to change it to nerve impulse -finally give us a stimulation for the brain to give it a response based on our personal experience and “knowing” to image the type of energy. There could be thousands of possibilities of abstract – waiting for us to explore.

In other word, Technology has crudely crunched down the analog world to digital world. Although people are busy working on describing all the in between world, digital world already give us the direction: the interpretation of what people can access the other world is the source of our inspiration. 1980’s alternative is only one tiny possibility that has been exploded.

She is currently interested in data mapping and enjoying designing sound in KYMA and programming in Max/MSP/Jitter to facilitate computer human interaction in her compositions.

She graduated in Ocean University of China, Qingdao, with a bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering focusing on architecture acoustics and psychoacoustics.

Presently, Chi is pursuing a Master’s degree in intermedia music technology in University of Oregon where she studies intermedia creation with Professor Jeffrey Stolet. She teaches Digital Audio and Sound Design in Future Music Oregon studios.

Season is a live composed piece programmed in MAX/MSP/Jitter and performed with two bright surfaces. Taking input from Max’s web cam and interperate the brightness into music source as well as the video source.
