Huashan

Huashan (花衫) is the sixth type of Dan role besides the originally divided five subtypes. The Dan (旦) refers to any female role in Beijing opera. Dan roles were originally divided into five subtypes. Old women were played by laodan, martial women were wudan, young female warriors were daomadan, virtuous and elite women were qingyi, and vivacious and unmarried women were huadan. The huashan role type combines the status of the qingyi with the sensuality of the huadan.

Huashan is a real-time music/dance interactive performance composition between the performer who perform with a wii remote controller and the choreographer’s structure improvisation. The composition takes input data from wii remote controller’s signal and live processing in Symbolic Sound’s Kyma system to shape a 8 channel opera ensemble experience.
